English Language Learner (ELL) Staff - Elementary

Preschool for Janesville (P4J)

Shelly Givens – Shelly has been an ELL teacher in the School District of Janesville since 2001 after teaching ELL for Minneapolis Public Schools since 1994. She taught most of those years at Wilson Elementary and currently provides services for students in P4J and at Van Buren Elementary School. She received a BA in Sociology from UW-Madision, a BA in Elementary Education from Augsburg College, an ELL degree from Hamline University, and a Masters Degree in early Literacy from UW-Whitewater.

Adams Elementary School

Katie Krey Wenzlaff– Katie started teaching in the School District of Janesville in 2005-06.   She has her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from UW-Whitewater with minors in ELL, Spanish Education, and Bilingual Education (Spanish-English).  Katie earned her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University.  Katie studied in Seville, Spain for a semester and has studied in Costa Rica.



Kristina Markestad-

Jackson Elementary School

Rebekah Combs-Bekah received a BA in Spanish and BSE in ESL from UW-Oshkosh and a MA in Teaching from National Louis University.  She has studied abroad in Merida, Mexico and Valladolid, Spain and is bilingual in Spanish and English.  Rebekah worked for the School District of Janesville from 2005-2007 then took two years off to teach ESL in Lima, Peru. Since then, she has taught at Edison Middle School and Jackson Elementary. Rebekah has traveled throughout Europe, to Mexico,  the Dominican Republic, Peru, and Nicaragua. 

Wendy Demet-

Marie Dries-Marie’s interest in teaching ELLs stems from her own experience growing up in a bicultural, dual-language home. She earned a BA and certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from Beloit College, and a MA in Teaching from Marian University (IN). Marie completed coursework for her ELL license through the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She has worked with elementary schoolchildren in public school systems in Beloit and Janesville, Wisconsin, and Indianapolis, Indiana; adult English Language Learners, young adults earning GED degrees and individuals seeking private language tutoring.  In 2011-2012 she taught the third grade—including ESL—at Mayatan Bilingual School in Copan Ruinas, Honduras.  Prior to working as an ELL teacher, Marie worked in nonprofit development and as a magazine writer and editorial consultant.

Jefferson Elementary School 

 Kari Alvarado – Kari started in the School District of Janesville in 2006-07 and began in education in 2005-06.  She has a degree from Carthage College in Spanish and International Political Economy.  Kari also has a M.Ed. from Georgia State University in Reading, Language and Literacy with an ESL emphasis.  She is bilingual in Spanish.

Heather Sullivan- 

Heather grew up right here in Janesville.  She feels fortunate to have returned here to start her teaching career in the 2005-2006 school year after graduating from Edgewood College in Madison, WI in 2004.  Heather has earned three college degrees - Elementary/Middle School Education (grades 1-9), Spanish Instruction (grades 1-12), and TESOL (grades 1-12).  She spent a semester studying at La Universidad de Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico.  Heather has also enjoyed teaching Spanish during summer school since 2005.

Ilse Peters -As a former English Language Learner herself, Ilse enjoys working with ELLs of all ages and finds it rewarding to assist newcomers, their families, and the regular classroom staff.  Ilse’s primary area of interest for decades has been foreign languages; she is licensed to teach French, German, and English as a Second Language.   Her goal for ELLs and foreign language students is to make concrete connections between the target language and history, geography, culture, current events, international trade etc. In her free time Ilse enjoys reading, cooking, traveling, and her family.  Years ago she organized an ELL program for adults and is still involved as a volunteer.

Hannah Wastek- Hannah graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2011 with bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education and Spanish Education.  She also received a minor in ESL and earned a bilingual certification.  While attending UW-Whitewater, Hannah studied abroad in Monterrey, Mexico, and did part of her student teaching in Guanajuato, Mexico.  Before coming to Janesville, she taught for two years as an Elementary ELL teacher in the School District of Monroe.
